Huawei Watch 2 4G Sport Review

A Smartwatch is a peculiar gadget in the sense that you don’t know you need it till you actually have one. It’s a gadget that grows on you and once you start using it regularly, you somehow realize its worth and need.

While wearables as a segment has been dominated by fitness bands, smartwatches are gaining traction. Apple remains the benchmark whereas brands like Huawei, Samsung, Motorola all have their offerings as well.

Huawei recently launched its Huawei Watch 2 which comes with 4G support and costs Rs 20,999. We spent some time with the device and here’s our review.

Design

The Huawei Watch 2 features a very traditional design with ceramic bezel and looks that almost make it look like an ordinary watch. But what comes inside it is what sets it apart. The Watch 2, unlike its predecessor, features a 1.2-inch circular AMOLED display with corning gorilla glass which is smaller than its previous generation. However, the difference is hardly noticeable. It is made of plastic and stainless steel which gives it an attractive look and makes it lightweight. There are two buttons located on the right side and the Heart Rate Sensor underneath the dial.

The Watch 2 comes in two variants the Huawei Watch 2 and Huawei Watch 2 Classic. While the former comes with 4G support the latter one doesn’t. That’s not the only difference though. Straps can be changed on both variants but Watch 2 can only be used with plastic Sport straps whereas Watch 2 Classic can sport leather straps also. The one we reviewed was the Huawei Watch 2 and it comes in three colours; Dynamic Orange, Carbon Black and Concrete Grey.

Specifications and Performance

The Huawei Watch 2 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 2100 CPU and runs on Android Wear 2.0 operating system with supports Mobile OS 4.4+ version for Android and 9.0+ for IOS, it has 4GB Flash memory with 768MB RAM. The 4G edition supports LTE, UMTS, TD-SCDMA and GSM networks. On the connectivity front, it supports Bluetooth 4.1 and Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n and NFC. The sensors the Huawei Watch 2 supports are 6-axis A + G sensor, 3-axis Compass, Heart Rate Sensor (PPG), Barometer, Capacitive Sensor and Ambient Light Sensor. It comes with 420mAh battery and IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.

The Huawei Watch 2 is easy to setup. Once it’s connected to your phone via Bluetooth and Android Wear app, all contacts and apps can be accessed on your watch. Receiving and making calls is as easy as it gets. With the 4G edition; you don’t even have to carry your phone around. If you like outdoor workouts, forget your phone, this Watch 2 has it all. Although we are not too keen on making or receiving calls on a smartwatch, it’s a handy thing to have. The sound quality is mostly good but it’s not advisable to receive or make calls in crowded areas.

It takes about an hour to fully charge the smartwatch and a single charge lasts you an entire day. Once you start using the Watch 2, you realize the convenience it brings as there’s no need to look at your phone every time it beeps. Since it also supports a mic, you can send messages simply speaking to it, so you don’t really have to complain about typing on a small screen. Being a water and dust resistant device, using it during workout sessions isn’t a problem.

it would be nice if the 4G edition could also come with leather straps as it could be great to change the straps and be able to use it on every occasion. The fitness apps work just fine on the Watch 2. Once you’ve fed your details it’ll show you your daily target and if you have been inactive for an hour you’ll receive a notification to do some stretches.
